Our Early Childhood services

Early Childhood Therapists (ECTs) at Neta Care are dedicated holistic practitioners who play a pivotal role in optimising a child’s environmental safety and empowering their ability to live independently. Our ECTs offer a wide range of assessments and therapeutic services to address various conditions and individual needs. Our services include:

Our highly skilled ECTs conduct thorough assessments to identify skills they need to learn in the same environments their peers learn in, close any gaps between them and their peers to ensure they are up to par with their peers so they can continue their learning alongside them. We gather detailed information about their functional abilities, daily activities, and environmental factors to create a comprehensive report that guides our interventions and recommendations. This allows us to tailor our services specifically to their unique circumstances.

Our ECT’s understand the difficulties that can be associated with behaviour management. They’re dedicated to helping you and your child understand their behaviours and work on strategies to help support them. Through comprehensive assessment and tailed interventions, we aim to reduce these behaviours and support emotional regulation to empower them to communicate their concerns in a safely.

Routines can have a significant impact on a child’s well-being and independence. Our ECTs are dedicated to identifying potential concerns and implementing strategies to establish positive routines. Through comprehensive assessments and tailored interventions, we aim to support parents and children to develop routines that provide confidence and decrease household disruptions.

We understand the importance of being prepared for the schooling environment, as some children have difficulties adapting to the changes. Our ECTs can work with your child to address a variety of concerns associated with adapting to these new environments, including social, behavioural, physical and cognitive concerns.

appropriate seating solutions for individuals with mobility challenges. Our OTs have expertise in conducting seating assessments, considering factors such as postural support, pressure management, and functional goals. We recommend suitable seating options, including powered and non-powered wheelchairs, cushions, custom-made wheelchairs, tracking systems, and hoists. Our aim is to enhance your comfort, mobility, and overall well-being.

Our ECT’s understand the complexities of parenting, especially with children with a disability. Using research-backed methods, our ECT’s aim to provide you with the skills and confidence to be able to support your child while reducing the stress on both you and them to facilitate a positive and safe environment.

frequently asked questions

Occupational therapy and early childhood therapy share common ground, both requiring a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Both professionals adopt a holistic approach to enhance a child’s functional capacity. However, Early Childhood Therapists (ECTs) specialise in children aged birth to 8 years, whereas Occupational Therapists (OTs) extend their expertise to those over 8, including adolescents and adults.

At Neta Care, we strategically deploy ECTs to alleviate demand on OTs and maintain manageable waitlists for clients of all age groups. When your referral is directed to an ECT, you gain the advantage of working with a professional dedicated to childhood development, exclusively managing a paediatric case load. For optimal and specialised care, trust Neta Care.

ECTs and OTs are both qualified to complete many of the same developmental and functional capacity assessments (FCAs) recognised by NDIS including:

  • ASQ-3 or ASQ-TRAK,
  • PEDI-CAT,
  • Vineland-3,
  • sensory profiles,
  • and more.

An ECT is not suitably qualified to complete a home modification assessment. This assessment requires an occupational therapist who has been appropriately trained in home modifications.

Whether an OT or ECT, a professional’s capability to work with behavioural issues will depend upon their professional development, experience, and capacity. Our ECTs do receive training in managing behavioural issues as a part of their bachelor training. With the correct experience and additional training, an ECT may also qualify to become an NDIS-approved Behaviour Support Practitioner, working with complex clients to create Positive Behaviour Support Plans.

When beginning regular sessions, our ECT’s priority will be completing a 10hr initial assessment to identify your child’s needs, interests, and strengths. This assessment period will include a parent interview, observations of the child, contact with the child’s day care or school (if relevant), report writing, and sharing of the completed document. The parent and NDIS will have a comprehensive report which includes developmental checklists, notes, goals, and a therapeutic plan for the period of therapy.

Once the therapeutic plan has been agreed upon, regular sessions are booked, and the therapeutic plan outworked. Parents are also equipped with strategies to support therapeutic outcomes in daily life. Within the holistic model, other parent-approved members of the child’s support team may also be equipped with strategies, such as educators or support workers. Regular therapeutic work may be outworked by an allied health assistant (AHA) who is overseen by the ECT. This reduces the need for therapy sessions with the ECT and enables funding to be stretched further.

Towards the end of the plan, further assessments take place to complete the report for NDIS and parents, demonstrating the child’s progress over the plan period and providing professional recommendations for funding of further supports.
